While it is often known that having the same content duplicated can send signals to the search engine, there are times when there is really no harm in having duplicate content. Analyzing those situations when a website can harbor duplicate content is one way of knowing when it is legitimate to do so and why that cannot risk your website from being banned on a search engine.
Some of the websites that carry a duplicate content need not worry about this not being legitimate in the eyes of a search engine. There are instances when the search engine will accept the fact that the content is duplicated for legitimate purposes. If you have websites that carry a similar product line on two different sites or if you have the same product listed on two sites then it might be legitimate for you to have the same content because it describes the same product.
Another scenario would be if you tried to copy content from another website with their permission and posted it to describe your product then it is tolerated by the search engine and does not necessarily put you on a risk for being banned. If you have a website that has a readable page and a printable page both with the same content then it is acceptable by the search engine. This could be a situation where the content duplication is not a cause for concern as far as the search engine rules are concerned.
Sometimes due to unknown internal site errors the content could be duplicated and if this is an unintentional error then it can be bypassed.
Search engines have a norm of not encouraging websites that have duplicate content. The reasons for doing so are validated by the search engines. Duplicated content can be very frustrating for visitors to websites as they do not give the visitor any new information and it can be quite annoying as this furnishes them with no new information. Sometimes some websites use this duplicate content without the permission of the parent site from where they have copied the content and this can bring up some copyright issues. Duplicating your content can lead you to be banned or blacklisted from a search engine database and this could not be good for your business. Another issue would be that if you had unique content then you would probably be able to get more traffic to your website rather than having a duplicate content that you have copied from some other website.
